What's up with these labels?

This is a random post because I've had this on my mind. Why is there a separate word for girls attracted to girls but not a special word for guys attracted to guys. Why do we say "gay and lesbian groups" instead of "gay groups" since gay includes female/female attraction? Also why do men dressing up as woman get the term drag, but if girls dress up as guys they just get the general term as cross dressing--which is also applicable to men dressing as girls. Why do we not ever call girls dressing in drag or another specific word like it? Has anyone else every wondered about these types of gender labels?

  1. For women in drag there is the term "Drag king". But you're right about how there needs to be another term for gay women. Perhaps even within gay-ness female sexuality is relegated to an afterthought mark?

  2. I really like your thoughts on female sexuality "relegated to an afterthought mark." I definitely agree!
