Extravagant Jocks in Frocks

While watching Rupaul's Drag Race: Jocks in Frocks, Susan Sontag's statement that "The hallmark of Camp is the spirit of extravagance" hit me over and over and over again. Just the fact that the mission was to turn jocks, who society would deem would be one of the last "stereotype" of people who would dress in drag, into drag queens is extravagant in itself. The stereotype of jocks is the epitome of manliness and as Yara said in the episode, "Five guys come in and it smells like testosterone", implying that the jocks were far from being feminine at all. However, the transformation of the jocks into drag queens was in a way unbelievable, and was once again, extravagant. The make-up applied to the jocks and to the drag queens were extravagant and exaggerated. The transformation of the jocks into drag queens was a perfect example of Sontag's statement of Camps as "things-being-what-they-are-not".
