Lady Gaga who?

Kinda late on posting the blog, but I was surprised to see that you guys hadn't commented on how Lady Gaga brought out her alter ego Jo Calderone at the VMAs!

Like the response to a lot of other things that Lady Gaga does, people were shocked.
I feel like this appearance got even more attention than some of the other crazy things she's done, which is surprising because once
you think about it, it's one of the most understated she's been!
Beyonce, who also has an alter ego, Sasha Fierce, is not really talked about all that much because it seems to be just an extension of her.
Lady Gaga on the other hand, it's an entirely different character. It's interesting to see how she acts, the way she wants to portray that specific gender role, which was the very tough guy.

It was also reported that she used the men's restroom when she was in the role.

  1. She probably couldn't have possibly given Britney Spears the lifetime achievement award as her own self with a 'straight' face?

  2. I haven't watched the VMA's in years but if I knew gaga was coming dressed as a guy I probably would have made an attempt. Anyone woman that's that willing to be so traditionally unattractive that publicly is absolutely gorgeous.

  3. @Jheanelle I agree. It's interesting how Gaga refuses the imperative for pop stars (or "woman" in general?) to be sexy. She often mocks the expectation of the hyper-sexualized woman's body, turning it into something grotesque. Theorist Mary Russo's work (and Kaja Silverman's) may be relevant here, she claims this is precisely a good feminist/queer strategy: to offer up grotesquerie to the male gaze so hungry for "sexy".
